Guests: WOMAN WANTS TALL MAN
A double dose of Deb and Martin was on offer: WOMAN WANTS TALL MAN are Debbie Cassell & Martin Ansell from Blandford Forum. They play acoustic guitars, banjo, bouzouki and both of them sing and harmonize. They have toured with John Martyn, Van Morrison, Jools Holland and collaborated with Sally Barker and The Poozies. As well as their own songs, they cover many luminaries, including Joni Mitchell, Sandy Denny and Bob Dylan. Find their albums on Bandcamp and YouTube.
Due to a personal emergency, enforcing an early leave-time for the guests, we ran a brief singaround and put them on at about 8:30, letting them away about 10pm, and closed the evening with another round and a half of singaround (a not unsuccessful format, as it transpired). Their music was a mix of the familiar (Martin raved about our responsive singing) and some pretty cracking self-penned stuff (Never-Never Land perhaps the stand-out). We’ll definitely be having them back!
“Dose 2” was a visit from the U.S. by DEBRA CHESMAN – a fine, sweet-voiced unaccompanied singer, who ran The Focsle 20 years ago – and Martin, her husband (who in the past has added harmonies to Debra's singing). In the light of the rarity of her attendances, we invited Debra to do an extra number, and got a modern ‘shanty’ about transporting oil from Venezuela to Trindad.
